Prepare for your next blood draw with practical tips on following lab instructions, staying hydrated, and sharing important information with your phlebotomist.

Follow your specific lab instructions

Not every blood test requires fasting. Ask your healthcare provider or laboratory whether you need to fast and for how long. Follow the instructions for your particular tests.

Drink water as allowed

Plain water is generally allowed during fasting for blood tests and can make collecting the sample easier. Follow any fluid restrictions or special instructions your healthcare provider has given you.

Ask about medicines and supplements

Tell your healthcare provider about your prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Ask whether you should take them before your test. Do not stop or change medicines on your own.

Tell your phlebotomist what you need

Before the blood draw, mention any previous fainting, difficult blood draws, or concerns about needles. Sharing this information helps the team plan for your comfort.

Speak up if preparation did not go as planned

If you ate or drank something during a required fast, tell the laboratory before your blood draw. They can advise whether the test should proceed or be rescheduled.
